St. Sophia Cathedral | Washington, DC

The beautiful byzantine St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral built from 1952 to 1955, is the sanctuary of the Orthodox Greek community in DC. The client came to us to work on various upgrades and renovations to the existing Cathedral building and site.

We worked with the client to design a new ADA-compliant ramp and stairway providing access from the parking area on the south side of the building to the lower level of the cathedral. The new ramp and stairs provide a fully accessible means of entry to all visitors and members of their congregation.

At the main entrance to the Cathedral facing west we worked with the client to design new handrails on the exterior grand entry stairs. The new custom-made railings incorporate elegant materials including custom bronze cast medallions that are derived from the iconography of the Orthodox Church.

At the interior we worked with the client to design renovated entrances to the lower level and complete modernization of the existing men's and women's restrooms. Both restrooms were enlarged and given a clean, elegant look by using white mosaic flooring tiles and different tones of grey throughout the other surfaces.

All these projects were designed respecting the original architecture of the church and providing balance between the old and the new built. We are currently engaged in the design phase for several exciting renovations to other areas of the cathedral building.
